Eye Examinations

What does an eye examination consist of?

Having your eyes tested for the first time can seem like a daunting experience, especially if you are new to wearing glasses or contact lenses. However, at Carlton & Stanley Opticians we will help you to understand what’s involved, and you’ll quickly realise that an eye test is just a routine procedure that will help maintain your vision and also monitor your eye health.

The Eyetest will check if a prescription is necessary (testing how well you can see), and it will also check the health of your eyes through this we will be able to identify any possible eye conditions that may require further investigation. Checks for conditions such as glaucoma and diabetes may also be necessary depending on your family history and age.

Your optician will run a few tests to find out how short or long sighted you are, including asking you to read words and letters where the print becomes smaller and smaller. Your prescription will be determined by how well you read these words and letters before needing the help of a corrective lens.

The back of your eye will also examined by your optician to find out how healthy your eyes are and to check for any potential issues that may require further investigation.

If your eye test determines that your vision requires correction, you’ll receive a prescription that will be unique to you. Your eye test will also have determined whether you’re long sighted (can see into the distance but not so well up close) or are short sighted, and have trouble seeing things far away.

Contact Lens Fitting and Aftercare

What happens during a contact lens fitting and aftercare?

If you have decided to choose contact lenses or make the change from glasses to contact lenses our optometrists are specially trained to adhere to your visual needs and advise the best contact lens for you. We carry out both contact lens fittings and aftercare, so, rest assured we are there for you every step of the way.

Recent advances in contact lens technology means that whatever your prescription there is almost certainly a contact lens for you.

Corporate Eyecare

Is a corporate eyecare different to a normal eye examination?

A Corporate Eyetest examination will be very similar to a normal Eyetest. However, particular emphasis will be made to the patients working environment, for example, working with a Visual Display Unit (VDU). If you are interested in us carrying out corporate eyecare for your employees, please contact our Practice Manager.

Dry Eye Consultations

What is dry eye?

A chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye by the tear film is what causes dry eye syndrome.

The consequences and symptoms of dry eyes range from subtle but constant eye irritation to significant inflammation and even scarring of the front surface of the eye. Dry eye can also be referred to as dry eye syndrome or dry eye disease.

A non invasive procedure to deduce the quality of the tear film will be carried out during a dry eye consultation. A treatment regime will then be carried out which could mean recommendations of dry eye drops or ointment leading to referral to specialists for further investigations.

Can we speed up your cataract referral?

Yes this is something that we are able to do at Carlton & Stanley. As well as providing routine cataract referrals, our optometrists are also qualified to carry out direct cataract referrals. This means carrying out further assessments whilst testing the eyes. This extra information is then utilised by the hospital to a reduce waiting times and increase efficiency for the cataract operation procedure.

Post-operative cataract assessment

Are we able to asses your eyes after a catatact operation?

Carlton & Stanley Opticians is proud to be working in conjunction with Spa Medica, one of the UK’s leading provider of NHS cataract surgery. Our specialist optometrist are qualified to carry out post-operative cataract assessments. Once our patients have returned from their cataract surgery and the recommended duration has passed, we are able to perform an aftercare assessment and if everything has gone accordingly, the patient can then be discharged.
